Yay! For Mesh Appliers

I’ve begun to notice that mesh can be a little slow in rezzing when TP-ing into new places. Often my lovely mesh avatar will come into view…with her clothing half a metre to the left. Not ideal, especially in G rated locations. So I’ve started to develop some pretty applier fripperies to protect from digital nudity. And not just lacy lingerie, but some pretty beach wear as well.

That odd feeling when your av is strangely familiar…

, , , , , ,

So, my last entry was about a new skin I was making and playing with the new Akeruka Lara Bento head.

I was playing with my new skin tone (beige) and gradually adjusting the shape to fit the skin. I also learned a new trick of combining a few hairstyles to create a brand-new look. I liked what I was seeing, so I started to take a few snaps when I started to get the feeling that the av looked a lot like someone… Who was it? Then it dawned on me…it’s me! Or at least the idealised image of me that I have in my head. Me on an amazingly brilliant hair & makeup day (and with those encroaching streaks of grey coloured in!)

Have you had one of those #firstlifemeetssecondlife moments?

A Spending Spree and Skin News

, , , , , ,

In honour of school holidays this week I decided to spend some Lindens.I’d been wanting to get an Akeruka Bento head, but held off. Sampling the latest, I was happy to see eyebrows are now a separate layer, and there are more bento heads to choose fromthan ever. I finally gave in and bought the Lara. Perhaps prophetically, Maitreya brought out their Bento update for the Lara mesh body, so now I have moving hands too! With all this I thought a new haircut was in order – I really wanted something that would suit a more mature avatar. The Argrace Makoto was just the kind of cut I was looking for. Setting the hair to alpha masking I was able to keep my complexity reading to just over 35000. Not too shabby.

The pics here also show off the skin and shapes that I’m working on at the moment – a mid-life skin for the avatar that’s wanting to show a bit of maturity. At the moment I’m using the omega applier for my AK Lara head – the developer kit doesn’t yet seem to cater to eyebrow selection. There are a few glitches targetting textures with the Omega, but I’m pretty happy with how it’s turning out.

Look for the Mid-life skin and shapes to be in store in the next week or so.

MI Rooth Mesh Head Review

Meli Imako has produced a bento head – Rooth – and while it’s definitely not perfect, it’s better than I expected.

Full perm – L$8000; Mod/Copy – L$3000. The full perm head needs the L$299 omega kit to make it omega ready (I’m not sure about the mod/copy head).

For me, the biggest plus is that finally we have a mod head – since I make my own skins I can add textures as well as normal and specular maps very easily without having to mess with appliers. I bought the full perm version when it was on a half price sale, so excellent value at that price, but still great value for having mod rights. It comes with a separate makeup layer, so you can choose to wear it separately, or layer them up if you like to slather on the makeup! Another bonus is that it seems to be relatively low lag and doesn’t weigh me down more than other heads that I’ve tried.

It was pretty easy to make a variety of shapes to suit various skins. The lips are less defined and pouty than many at the moment – but I consider that a bit of a plus. You can see some of the varieties I managed with a few different skins. The first is the default that you get in the pack. The rest are different skins I designed for the system avatar, so you can see that skins mapped to the SL av work well with little adjustment (though watch the mouth – teeth are mapped differently on this skin, so I stick to the default texture for that face).

There are some minuses – no neck fix at this stage (you can see the visible seam where I haven’t matched the body to the face skin). The eyelashes do not use alpha – they are individually modelled. This is both a plus and minus – you don’t have the alpha glitch problem, but they can look like your mascara is really clumped together. My biggest minus though is the animations – while quite a few are included, they don’t stop properly (you need to Reset Skeleton and Animations to make it stop). Reading through the script I think the problem is that a default neutral animation was meant to be included – hopefully that will be corrected in an update.

This head is not for the beginner – but it’s great for the modder 🙂

60 Year Old Avatar Update

So, it’s been a while since I’ve worked on my 60 YO skin…and now that bento is here it’s a perfect time. I’ve discovered that the MI “Rooth” head makes a great base for this avatar. Check out the before and after pictures for comparison. I’m also making a wider variety of shades – you see in the current pic I’m wearing the “pale” skin.mi-rooth_comp

Keep an eye on group updates or this blog for their release date 🙂

Update on Helen Skins & Shapes

So, I’ve been hard at work, updating the shapes for various Bento heads and working on skin variations for various appliers. Currently I have three (soon to be 5) shades of Helen skin (Neutral, Tan & Dusky) over five appliers (Omega, Catwa, LeLutka, Eve & Slink). Shapes come with each skin – System, Catwa Catya, Lelutka Simone II & EVE’olution. Each skin also has appliers for 6 different eyebrow options and 8 makeup variations.
